TITLE
fMSX Amiga 2.2
AUTHOR
Hans Guijt (hguijt@inter.nl.net)
DESCRIPTION
fMSX Amiga emulates an MSX computer on an Amiga. Features include:
- Full emulation of the MSX1 and MSX2 systems.
- Support for reading/writing MSX disks, disk images, and virtual disk
images.
- Can play all types of MSX ROMs, including ROMs bigger than 32KB.
- Support for the PSG, SCC, and FM-Pac sound chips (through AHI, native
or through the Concierto soundcard).
- Built-in tools for the hardened gamer, such as autofire and cheat
finder.
'MSX' is an 8-bit computer system with surprisingly good graphics and
sound capabilities. How does graphic resolutions of up to 512 * 424, up
to 256 colors on screen, and up to 18 channel music sound?
MSX is also the platform on which the original Metal Gear games appeared
first. If you want to see where Metal Gear Solid has it roots, check out
the 2D originals on fMSX Amiga.
fMSX can be downloaded from the official fMSX Amiga website:
http://surf.to/fmsx. The site also features screenshots from many MSX
games, and a soundsample taken from fMSX while emulating the FM-Pac (an
MSX soundcard) on the Concierto soundcard!
MSX software is not included with the package, but many packages
(mostly games) can be found on the web:

Hundreds of games are available from these sites, and some form a
worthy addition to the Amiga software collection. Check out games like
S.D. Snatcher or Space Manbow to see what MSX can really do.
Of course fMSX Amiga is fully multitasking, runs in an intuition screen,
and has a font-sensitive, resizable user interface that includes an ARexx
port.
NEW FEATURES
It can run Space Manbow now. This game has been requested so many times
that I lost count, and indeed it is an excellent game.
The VDP command emulation was completely rewritten. The new commandset
clips correctly in all cases and will not enter infinite loops. As a
result MSX2 compatibility has substantially improved.
Palette handling was improved. In screensplits, the emulator will now pick
the colors that are used most often. In addition it runs much faster on a
public screen now. A few bugs were removed.
Interrupt handling was also improved. The new code can deal with many more
situations and is a lot faster than before.
The special delay code in the 68060 version was improved. The VDP commands
are now synchronized to the Z80 (only on the '060 version though).
An autofire feature was added, and border colors were implemented.
Many bugs were fixed, ranging from the harmless to the nasty. fMSX is now
more stable than ever before.
Compatibility also greatly improved. Newly playable games include Psycho
World, Firehawk, Xevious, Golvellius, Quarth, and of course the
above-mentioned Space Manbow.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Various people have told me to stop bothering with low-end systems.
I agree with them. Although in theory, it should run on 68020-based
systems with 2MB of RAM, it requires a 68040 or even better 68060,
and 6MB of RAM, depending on the chosen MSX configuration.
fMSX can take full advantage of graphics boards, either through
CyberGfx or Picasso'96. AGA and OCS/ECS are also fully supported.
Many of fMSX' soundmodes require AHI.
If a Concierto soundcard is present, it can be used to emulate the
MSX FM-Pac. FM-Pac emulation through the Concierto is vastly superior
to FM-Pac emulation through AHI, and adds a whole new dimension
to your MSX gaming experience!
At least AmigaOS 3.0 is required.
